A marketing change log template is a table with one row per change and eight columns: date, channel, change, owner, why, expected impact, link and result. Download ours as a CSV, open it in Google Sheets or Excel, and log every change that can move a metric you report on.

How do you set it up in Google Sheets or Excel?

  1. Download the CSV and import it (Google Sheets: File → Import; Excel: open the file).
  2. Freeze the header row and turn on filters.
  3. Add a dropdown (data validation) to the Channel column with your channel list.
  4. Format Date as a date and sort newest first.
  5. Create one copy per client or brand, and share it with edit access only for the people who make changes.

Rules that keep the log useful

  • Log when you make the change, not at the end of the week.
  • One change per row. “Several updates” can't explain anything later.
  • Log only what can move a number: see what to log in a marketing change log.
  • Include external events: holidays, competitor promotions, outages.
  • Read it in every weekly review and fill in the Result column.

When does a spreadsheet stop being enough?

A sheet works until you have several clients, several people logging and clients who want to read it. Then you'll miss a view of changes on a real time axis, per-client access, read-only viewers and an edit history. That's the job of Changeline: the same columns, on one timeline per client, with owner, editor and viewer roles. It's free while in early access.

FAQ

Is this template free?

Yes. The CSV is free to download, copy and adapt for your team or your clients.

Should agencies keep one log per client?

Yes. One log per client keeps access simple and lets you share it with the client without exposing other accounts.

How detailed should each entry be?

Detailed enough that someone else can understand it in six months: a specific title, the owner and one sentence of why. Put long context behind a link.
