Meta Ads activity history: where to find it and what it misses

The Changeline team · Updated · 3 min read

Meta Ads Manager keeps an activity history for your ad account and for each campaign, ad set and ad. It shows what changed, who changed it and when, and you can filter it by date range, level and type of activity. It does not record why a change was made, and Meta doesn’t publish how long history is kept.

Where is activity history in Meta Ads Manager?

There are two views:

  • For one campaign, ad set or ad: select it in Ads Manager and open its history panel (the clock icon, or “View history” in the editing panel).
  • For the whole ad account: open the account-level activity history, where you can see all changes across campaigns and filter them.

Meta moves menus often, so if you can't find the view, search Meta's Business Help Center for “view activity history for your ads”.

What can you filter in Meta’s activity history?

  • Date range: set it to the days before the shift you're investigating.
  • Level: account, campaign, ad set or ad.
  • Activity type: budget, targeting, creative, status, bid and other changes.
  • Person: who made the change, including automated rules.

Which Meta changes matter most for performance?

Changes that reset or disturb the learning phase deserve a line in your log every time:

  • significant budget changes;
  • new or edited audiences and targeting;
  • new creatives or big creative swaps;
  • a different optimisation event or conversion location;
  • pausing and restarting ad sets;
  • destination URL changes.

Also log changes outside Ads Manager that affect Meta results: pixel and Conversions API changes, consent banner updates and landing page releases.

What doesn’t Meta’s activity history show?

  • The reason for a change, or what the team expected to happen.
  • Changes outside Meta: the landing page, the pixel set up in GTM, the CRM form.
  • A published retention period. Meta doesn't state how long history is kept, so don't treat it as your archive.
  • A shared view for people without access to the ad account, such as clients or new analysts.

How do you keep a Meta change record the team can use?

  1. Log important Meta changes in a marketing change log as you make them: date, title, owner and one sentence of why.
  2. Keep Google Ads, website and tracking changes on the same log, so you can see what else happened that week.
  3. When results move, open the log first, then confirm details in Meta's activity history.

Changeline gives each client one timeline across Meta, Google Ads, website, tracking and CRM. Automatic import from Meta Ads is coming soon, with new imports waiting in a review inbox until someone adds the why.

FAQ

How far back does Meta Ads activity history go?

Meta doesn’t publish a fixed retention period for activity history. If you need a durable record for audits or year-over-year analysis, keep your own change log.

Can I see who paused my Meta campaign?

Yes. Open the campaign’s activity history: each entry shows the person or automated rule that made the change and when.

Does activity history show changes made by automated rules?

Yes, changes made by automated rules appear in activity history, and each rule also has its own history in the Automated rules section.
