Google Ads change history: how to find it, read it and its limits
Google Ads change history lists the changes made to your account, campaigns and ad groups during the past 2 years, with the date, the user or tool that made each one, and the old and new values. You can filter it by date, change type and user, and see it at account, campaign or ad group level.
Where is change history in Google Ads?
In Google Ads, open the account and go to Change history (search for “change history” in the top search bar if you can't find it in the menu). To see changes for a single campaign or ad group, select it first; the page then shows only changes at that level.
The page lists each change with its date and time, the user, the campaign and ad group, and the old and new values. A performance view helps you line changes up with impressions, clicks, conversions and cost.
How do you filter change history?
- Date range: pick the days before the metric moved. Keep the range tight.
- Change type: budget, bid, status, keyword, ad, targeting and other types.
- User: see only the changes made by one person or by a specific tool.
- Level: select a campaign or ad group before opening the page to narrow the list.
A useful routine: filter to the 7 days before a drop, change type “budget” and “status” first, then “ads” and “keywords”.
Who made the change? Reading the user column
The user column shows the email of the person who made each change in the interface. Changes made by other means show a label instead: the API or a named third-party tool, automated rules and scripts, and system changes made by Google Ads itself. Google also notes that changes made by Google representatives may not always appear.
What doesn’t Google Ads change history show?
- Anything older than 2 years. Year-over-year audits of older periods are not possible from this page.
- The reason. You see that a budget went from 100 to 120, never why, or what the team expected.
- Changes outside Google Ads. A landing page release, a GTM publish or a CRM form change that broke conversions won't appear.
- Full detail for large bulk changes. Google says the page limits the details shown per entry, so bulk edits can be summarised.
- Some account-level settings may not be listed.
If you pull data through the Google Ads API, the change_event resource is even narrower: queries must be within the past 30 days and return at most 10,000 rows each.
How do you keep a record beyond Google Ads?
Use change history for the fine detail, and keep a marketing change log for the team record:
- Log changes that can move a number (budgets, bid strategies, new campaigns, conversion actions) when you make them, with one line of why.
- Put website, tracking and CRM changes on the same log, so they sit next to the Google Ads changes on the same dates.
- Once a month, skim change history for changes no one logged (automated rules, scripts, recommendations applied by others) and add the important ones.
In Changeline, each client gets one timeline and the Google Ads changes sit next to Meta, website and tracking changes. Automatic import of Google Ads budget and status changes is coming soon.
FAQ
How far back does Google Ads change history go?
Change history covers the past 2 years. Older changes are not available in the interface, so keep your own log if you need a longer record.
Can I undo a change from change history?
Google Ads lets you undo most types of changes made in the last 30 days from change history. For older changes, or types that can’t be undone, make the reverse change manually and log it.
Can I export Google Ads change history?
For programmatic access, developers can query the change_event resource in the Google Ads API. It only covers the past 30 days and returns up to 10,000 rows per query, so export regularly if you need a record.
